Getting your HR right… the basics

At the Coachworks we have a passion for supporting small business in their HR.  Too often it is the small businesses who end up with whooping fines at Tribunals for not keeping within the law.

People generally set up businesses for 1 of 2 reasons… they  have a passion for what they do, or they see a niche in the market.  Most people don’t start up their own businesses to manage people, however, as business grows so does the responsibility to do just that.

Key documents that need to be in place:

  • Having a Company Handbook sets the expectations from the start.
  • Holiday forms – Holidays can be bones of contention n a company, setting out clear guidelines about amount of notice employees must give etc makes the holiday process much easier.
  • Job Decriptions – specific to the individual role Job Descriptions are an invaluable tool for both employees and manager to ensure everyone knows what is expected of them.
  • Terms and Conditions of Service – often wrongly referred to an the contract the T&C’s document sets out rates of pay, hours, notice, restrictive covenants etc.
