This summer will be an Olympic summer, as London prepares for it’s first Olympics of the millennium it’s time for the savvy employer to think ahead.
Thinking about any event such as Sporting, Jubilee, National Celebrations etc. in advance puts you, the employer, in the best position. Think about issuing a communication to staff up to 6 months before the event, this encourages them to think and plan ahead so business continuity is not affected.
The Olympics Games is bound to raise the spirits of the country, you may want to take the opportunity to use this as a morale boost for staff – an Olympic themed day which raises money for a local charity may go down well.
AVOID SWEEP STAKES! Remember that any betting on Company premises (even if it is good humour) is a big no no.
- The Olympics opening ceremony will take place on 27th July 2012 and the closing ceremony will end the games on Sunday 12th August
- The majority of events will take place in the Olympic Park, Stratford, East London.
- A full list of venues can be found below.
- If you operate your business in or around London, now is the time to plan ahead, consider options such as working from home, flexible working and skeleton staff if appropriate.
Time off for the Olympics
None of the Olympic events constitute a Public holiday but you may want to consider allowing your staff time away from work to watch events. This is your decision as the employer.
We would recommend that staff take holiday to watch the Games or arrange to make the time off (staff may vary in their enthusiasm for the games, in the interests of fairness we would recommend against giving time off to certain staff/groups of staff).
If staff want to watch certain events during working hours, we would suggest that you ask them to come up with a plan for covering the telephones and making up the time.
